Down Command

  1. Start with your dog in a sitting position.
  2. Hold a treat in your hand so that the dog cannot eat it.
  3. Say the dogs name.
  4. Say "down".
  5. Point with your hand down in betweem the dog's paws.
  6. Once the dog lays completely down, say "good dog" first, then give him the treat.
Hand signal down
Legs kicked out Your dog should move into a down position by following the movement of your hand. Never push on your dogs head to encourage a down. It could injure its neck.

Note: The dogs legs should kick out from underneath him. Notice the back legs in the picture. This may not happen immediately but you will want to work towards this. It will help your dog to remain in a down stay position when you are ready to teach him.
