When your dog is exposed to sick dogs at a kennel, dog show, or other places with high dog populations, it can catch
kennel cough. Also referred to as "canine cough" or by its
scientific name, tracheobronchitis, this stubborn respiratory infection can keep dogs coughing
for weeks or months.
Canine respiratory disease is not ussualy fatal unless pneumonia develops. But it can
cause appetite loss, lack of energy, and poor appearance, in addition to coughing.
When infected dogs cough,
disease-causing organisms get into the air and can easily infect other dogs. Animals kept at boarding kennels, shelters,
pet shops, grooming shops, dog shows, and animal hospitals are considered at higher risk. At the
Suwanee Animal Hospital, all dogs that are boarding are required to be current on their kennel cough vaccination.
A wide variety of viruses and vacteria can be involved in canine respiratory disease. The three most common
are: 1) Canine parainfluenza virus, 2) Canine adenovirus
type 2 (CAV-2), and 3) Bordatella bronchiseptica bacteria.
Vaccines against
all three of these viruses or bacteria are available, sometimes in combination with vaccines against other diseases of
dogs.
