| Stay Command
|

|
|
- Start with the dog on your left side in a sitting or down position.
- Hold a treat in the opposite hand of the one that you will signal with.
- Say the dogs name.
- Say "stay" while holding your hand in front of the dog.
- Swing your right foot around the front of the dog as shown in the picture below.
- Repeat the "stay" command with the signal while in front of the dog.
- Swing your right leg back to the original position.

As your dog progresses, you will start backing up one step at time. Later, sometimes much later, you will walk away with your back towards the dog. Always return to your dogs side before giving the reward.
Note: Your dog should stay seated or down. Do not reward a dog that moves, creeps or lays down when started in a sit position; Likewise do not reward a dog that gets up when started in a down position.
